2014 HSTA Friend of Youth: Robin Hermance
Mahalo to Robin Hermance, this year’s HSTA Friend of Youth. Robin was honored at the HSTA Convention April 12, 2014.
Robin is a superhero with a heart of gold. As a retired teacher and someone who has been involved with youth most of her life, knowing what children need and being there for children is part of Robin’s every fiber. After more than 30 years of teaching, Robin continues to be engaged as a member of the Waianae High School, Maili Elementary School, and Waianae Elementary School communities. She also volunteers at the Waianae Public Library.
Some of Robin’s contributions include being on the School Community Council and assistant treasurer of the Parent Teacher Student Association. She has taken the lead on raising college scholarships, preparing Christmas Eve dinner for homeless families in Waianae, and being a part of Waianae High School’s monthly Story Night. She is in school three to five days a week preparing snacks, helping with student projects, reading to students, and assisting with math.
Leeward Chapter President Juli Patten thanks Robin Hermance for being a Friend of Youth.
While a teacher, Robin volunteered for years helping with numerous activities such as the successful Music Club and annual recital and dinner, student government the Junior Police Officers, Jump Rope for Heart, Pennies for Patients, career fairs, prom, Kids Vote, and hoolaulea. Her involvement at Nanakuli Elementary School touched thousands of children. She volunteered with the Leeward Coast Keiki Program for 15 years. Finally, Robin donates school supplies and clothing for children. These lists just scratch the surface of all Robin gives to students and the community.
Since her retirement, Robin has been an active member of HSTA-Retired.
Robin’s philosophy is, “Kindness, like a boomerang, always returns.”
