2016 HSTA Legislative Priorities

Posted September 3, 2015, 11:05 a.m.

Every education decision is a political decision.

Each year the members from every chapter on the Government Relations Committee (GRC) strive to promote and advance the cause of public education through political and legislative activities.  The Government Relations Committee encourages our members to help identify the legislative priorities they would like the Association, HSTA, to focus on during the 2016 legislative session via a survey open to all members.

This year, from July 31 through August 12, 2015, members were asked to respond to the legislative priorities survey.  Member responses helped the teachers on the Government Relations Committee formulate legislative priorities that were recommended to the Board of Directors for approval on August 29, 2015.

Teachers from every chapter voluntarily serve on the HSTA Government Relations Committee and the Board of Directors.

The future of public education in Hawaii is in the hands of our elected officials. The average teacher is focused on the students in their classroom. Getting involved in political action does not come naturally and it tests teachers’ comfort zones. However, when we elect candidates who support teachers and public education we have a better chance of improving student learning and helping all children in Hawaii maximize their potential.
