HSTA Teacher Institute Day schedules, programs set

Institute Day events at HSTA chapters across the state will feature important updates on negotiations, including new details about bargaining. Mark your calendar for Teacher Institute Day on your island the week of Feb, 13 - 17. As a professional day, it is a work day and teacher attendance is expected. It’s your professional obligation to be there!

Monday, Feb. 13 – Oahu chapters: Honolulu, Central, Leeward and Windward at Blaisdell Center Arena and Exhibition Hall

  • We will march from the Blaisdell Center, walking mauka on Victoria Street and taking a left onto Beretania Street to the State Capitol, a distance of about 8/10 of a mile, which is a 16-minute walk with no hills. HPD will close two makai lanes of traffic on Beretania Street so we can move quickly and safely.
  • Wear your red HSTA logo shirt, comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen, and/or umbrella or hat if you wish.
  • Trolleys and buses will be provided for those who are unable to walk to the Capitol.
  • A mini bento lunch and water will be provided—order your bento now from your faculty representative.
  • While we will have signs for you to use, you can also make and bring your own.
  • Buses and trolleys will return everyone from the Capitol to the Blaisdell, or you can walk back too.
  • Want to walk back to the Blaisdell from the Capitol? There are two routes: 1. Re-trace our march (except for Victoria Street): head Diamond Head on Beretania, turn right onto Ward, then cross back toward the Blaisdell at Ward and King. (But stay on sidewalks – traffic lanes will no longer be coned) 2. Take a right on Pensacola, turn left at City Hall/Main Library onto King Street, then cross back toward the Blaisdell at Ward and King. (You can walk on either side of King Street).
  • Let’s show our Negotiations Team support and tell lawmakers they need to support education and our keiki!

Parking with be tight because we expect a high turnout. We strongly encourage you to carpool or take one of the HSTA buses that are available. If you live close to the NBC, walk or take the city bus there. Here are your parking options:

    1. $6 flat rate at the Neal Blaisdell Center parking structure (enter off King Street).

    2. Free at McKinley High School starting at 6 a.m. (enter off Pensacola Street). Walk through the baseball field gate to NBC.

    3. Free at Ala Moana Center. Park on the Atkinson Street side of the mall and look for one of four shuttle buses with HSTA banners at the Atkinson Street terminal, which has a green awning. Shuttles between Ala Moana and the Blaisdell will run from 6:30 to 10 a.m. and start up again from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
