Molokai Resident Is HSTA Friend of Youth Award Recipient for 2016

This year’s HSTA Friend of Youth Award went to Ted Takamiya for his outstanding work with youth on Molokai.

The Friend of Youth Award is given annually to individuals or organizations who go above and beyond to provide service to children in their communities.

Takamiya’s motto of “Invest in People” shows in his work with the youth of Molokai. Much of his work with youth comes through his nearly three decades of work with the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center, but it also goes beyond. He works with youth in music, chess, college recommendations, and monthly and weekly letters of encouragement. Through his actions he has been about to stop cyclical destructive behaviors, channel youth toward meaningful careers, and most especially, filling youth with happy, life-affirming memories.

Congratulations and a deep mahalo to Ted Takamiya.
