2015 ExTL Associate Program.

ExTL Associate Program application link  The deadline for the ExTL Associate program is May 2, 2015.

The Hawaii Education Alliance for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (ExTL) is a partnership between the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) and the Hawaii Education Association (HEA).

This 6-day, 6-credit ExTL Associate Program course is designed to develop a cadre of master teachers who will be able to share their innovative, effective teaching practices with their colleagues through the HIDOE’s PDE3 courses.  A major outcome of the program is the creation of new professional development courses that will be offered by HSTA to its members through HSTA’s Instruction and Professional Development (IPD) Program.  The overarching goal of ExTL is to work collaboratively with HSTA in building a robust, viable professional development program that is initiated, planned and delivered by teachers, for teachers.

Participants will need to go through a selection process before they are chosen for the program. The selection will be done by HSTA, on the basis of:
•The professional development needs and interests of HSTA members;
•Validation of the innovative, effective teaching practice; and
•The alignment of the teaching practice to HSTA’s values and strategic goals.

The deadline for application submission is May 2, 2015 at 5pm HST.

NOTE: Applicants will be notified of HSTA’s decision no later than May 15, 2015 at 5pm HST.”
Program dates are June 18, 19, 24, 25, July 11 and 18, 2015

HSTA Hawaii Teacher Leadership Initiative Cohort.

Are you ready to take hold of your career, learning to lead in matters of practice and policy?

Do you ever find yourself thinking, “If more teachers were leading, then…”—and wishing you were one of those teachers?

Are you eager to make a difference beyond your classroom—but not sure where to begin?

Through the Teacher Leadership Initiative (TLI), the National Education Association (NEA) is partnering with the Center for Teaching Quality (CTQ) and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (National Board) to support 300 teachers across 14 sites in advancing as leaders in the profession. TLI is designed for teachers—like you—who want to expand your impact by building your knowledge and skills and then activating your leadership through a culminating capstone experience.

This is the second year that HSTA has offered this program.  It is a one year, paid program for teachers to grow as a leader while developing teachers’ ideas into new DOE practices/policies.

Summer Internship Program.

Registration is open for the Stacy Nishina Business Intern Program. It is a week long program that runs every summer, one session in June and one in July 2015.

The Stacy Nishina Business Internship Program supports and enhances the professional roles of teachers by providing teachers with an orientation of today’s 21st century workforce. The internship also focuses on the essential skills/competencies that students will need to possess in order to be successful in college, workplace and citizenship in this ever-evolving 21st century. The program starts with an orientation, teachers then spend three days as an intern for a local business, wrapping up with portfolio writing.
