We are saddened by the passing of former Leeward Chapter UniServ Director Mary Cochran. During her 10 years with HSTA, she was the consummate advocate and organizer. After leaving HSTA, she continued to help teachers. As an elected member of the Board of Education, Mary wanted to elevate the profession of teaching by promoting better teacher pay and working conditions. As an attorney in private practice, Mary often represented teachers at no cost. As an active member of the Democratic Party, Mary challenged the party to not just give lip service to public education, but to do everything possible to truly make it the number one priority of the state.
Mary will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched. Each person that she touched has their own special memory. Maui County Democratic Party Chairman Troy Hashimoto met Mary while he was the student member on the Board of Education. He told the Maui News that she took him under his wing to teach him about the school system and politics. “She told me you win some, you lose some, but you at least gotta try, and that’s what she was always about,” he said. Former BOE member Lei Ahu Isa said, “She was a fighter for justice.”
