business items (more detailed info forthcoming as we get closer to Convention)

·        NB-9: State Senate and House Recommendations-Primary Elections 2008 (see attached)

ConCon(Constitutional Convention):

v     Leeward Chapter Coordinators: Gail Kono and Joan Lewis

v     your coordinators and/or HSTA staff will visit schools regarding ConCon

v     arrangements for visitations will be made through FRs

v     check the HSTA website for any and all current/accurate  information

     regarding this topic

·        Drug and Alcohol Testing

v     declaratory ruling petition filed on 7/18/08 with the Hawaii Labor Relations Board

o          Employer demanding conditions beyond scope of Art. II

o          Employer demanding random testing which is unconstitutional and unlawful

v     Legislature over-rode Governor’s veto...so our VEBA will continue until 2010

v     Thank you to Randy Perreira from HGEA who called the Legislators and told them

that HGEA was not opposed to the bill, which was of concern to some legislators.

      3. Rae Yamanaka, former Hilo Chapter President, resigned and is now serving as the Hilo Chapter

           UniServ Director during Mark Nakashima’s leave of absence, effective July 30, 2008.  Edwin

           Kagawa, Hilo Vice President, will be assuming the Hilo President’s duties.

      4. Allan Silva will be covering Windward UniServ Director Sam Moore’s position until further notice.
