Letters to the Paper
Mahalo teachers
I'm writing to publicly thank our teachers.
The end-of-the school year is just about here and I felt compelled to let our teachers know they are appreciated.
Today, it's so easy to blame, judge, fault and condemn the administrative systems, testing standards, poor academic test scores, and the many complexities that exist in schools that I don't pretend to know. Instead, I choose to stick with what I do know.
I'm a parent. I love my kids and want the best opportunities available to them. I can't change systems, standards or test scores single-handedly. What I can do, is support my kids at home and partner with the teachers that they have.
While they are with their teachers, I'm trusting that my kids are learning and discovering and being inspired to do and to be the best they can be. Our teachers can be our greatest asset -- but they need our support in order to do what they need to do, and to do it well.
Here again, I choose not to feel despair and frustration with the overwhelming obstacles facing education in general. Change begins with small steps, and may that first step simply be supporting our teachers by showing them respect, being responsible, getting involved and appreciating what they do for our children.
From one parent to another, please, thank a teacher today!

Aloha given to daughter appreciated
May 28, 2011
The Maui News
We would like to thank Lahainaluna High School administration, staff, teachers, counselors, students and parents who gave so much aloha to our daughter Alaka'i Smith-Kaukini while she was a boarder and attended the school from 2007 to 2011.
It has been a long four years, but four years well spent. She has grown into a well-rounded, independent young woman, and my husband and I and her ohana are so very proud of her.
Thank you for allowing her to be the best that she can be and more, and for making Lahainaluna her home away from home. She chose to attend that school and in doing so she has discovered how important her place of birth really is and we are grateful for that. Her heart will always be in Hana but her spirit will remain with you forever.
We appreciate you. Imua Lunas. Mahalo a nui loa.

During the week of May 1-7, schools across the nation expressed their appreciation to teachers and staff for their outstanding contributions to students.
Here at Keaau Elementary School, especially during Teacher Appreciation Week, we want our teachers and staff to know how much we appreciate what they do each day to make a difference in the lives of our students. We honor the men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating our children. Thanks for helping our school shine!
