Castle Teacher Receives 2011 Teacher Excellence Award

Bobby Duque received the 2011 The American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association Teacher Excellence Award. The Castle High School teacher was of one of only two teachers to receive this national award. Barbara Brody of Vermont was also honored with the award that honors outstanding driver and traffic safety educators. The award, sponsored by the National Road Safety Foundation, was announced at the ADTSEA annual conference.

Other Hawaii individuals recognized during the conference included, Janice Meeker. She received the 2011 Richard Kaywood Memorial Award, sponsored by the American Automobile Association. Since 1985, this award has been presented to an individual for outstanding contributions to traffic safety in memory of Dr. Richard Kaywood, who served the Association and traffic safety education for many years.
Joanne Swearingen received the Lifetime Achievement Award. As a Department of Education staff member, Joanne was responsible for driver education in the late 1990's and early 2000. She established the CADRE that trains new instructors and she worked closely with the Hawaii Department of Transportation to establish the Hawaii driver education program used today.
