For Immediate Release
March 16, 2010
Honolulu, HI - After conducting interviews with candidates and careful consideration and discussion by the HSTA Government Relations Committee and approval by the Board of Directors and the National Education Association (NEA), HSTA is recommending Colleen Hanabusa for the First Congressional District Special Election.
"When it comes to public schools, every decision is a political decision, so it's important that we elect leaders who will consistently fight for public schools. We need elected officials who will go to bat for public schools and the students they serve every day, not just at election time. That's why we chose Colleen, " said HSTA President Wil Okabe.
During her interview with the HSTA Government Relations Committee, Senator Hanabusa's responses supported the goals and objectives set forth by the National Education Association:
- Providing great public schools for all students;
- Fully funding the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA, also known as the No Child Left Behind Act or NCLB) to ensure that students get what is promised to them, a solid education and the tools necessary to lead full and productive lives;
- Policies that support educators;
- Accountability systems used to identify policies and programs that improve student learning, diagnose problems areas, and provide schools needing resources for improvement; and
- Accountability systems based on multiple measures.
