Benjamin Parker School has been chosen by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) to serve on a committee composed of a select group of educators from across the country to assure the National Board's Literacy: Reading-Language Arts Standards reflect the best practices and latest research in the field.
Dr. Gillentine is among nine National Board Certified Teachers on the 12-member panel, chosen from a pool of approximately 500 applicants.

"At a time when there is intense scrutiny of how we can optimize student achievement, it is vital that we carefully and clearly explain what accomplished literacy teachers should know and be able to do for students in early and middle childhood settings. The standards that we are revising have the potential for significant impact on teaching and learning," said Gillentine. "For me, serving on this committee is a unique privilege to describe expectations of young literacy learners and also how accomplished literacy teachers can express their commitment to the teaching profession. It is an honor to serve as co-chair of this committee."
"Jonathan is an expert in the field of education and has a track record of documented expertise in content knowledge and in the practice of teaching," said Joan Auchter, chief program officer, NBPTS. "At a time when more emphasis is being placed on teacher effectiveness than ever before, I am pleased that the work of this committee will serve as the foundation for the assessment in the National Board Certification process in the teaching of early and middle childhood literacy."
Today, there are more than 6,000 teachers nationwide who have achieved National Board Certification in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts. These outstanding educators are working every day to create opportunities for students to learn and succeed.
As part of the National Board's ongoing mission to provide high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, the Literacy: Reading-Language Arts committee will review and revise the current standards that are the basis for National Board Certification in the field. Practicing classroom teachers fill a majority of seats on standards committees while other members represent districts, states and higher education. Committees reflect the nation's regional and ethnic diversity as well as the range of teaching contexts and professional views that exist about what constitutes accomplished teaching.
In December, NBPTS released the names of America's outstanding teachers who were part of the 2010 class of National Board Certified Teachers. More than 8,600 teachers nationwide achieved National Board Certification this year, bringing the total number of teachers and school counselors certified by NBPTS to more than 91,000.
A voluntary assessment program designed to develop, recognize and retain accomplished teachers, National Board Certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete. While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, NBCTs have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices.
In the most rigorous and comprehensive study to date about National Board Certification, the non-partisan National Research Council found that students taught by NBCTs make higher gains on achievement tests than students taught by other teachers.
All 50 states, the District of Columbia and hundreds of local school districts recognize National Board Certification as a mark of distinction and a model for identifying accomplished teaching practice. A widely accepted form of pay-for-performance that is supported by teachers and administrators nationwide, approximately two-thirds of the states provide salary incentives and cover the costs for teachers who pursue and/or achieve this advanced credential.
