HSTA and HIDOE reached agreement on a joint contract interpretation that accounts for the modifications needed to address the operational aspects of what was to be the first nine (9) student days of the school year.
The change gives school staff an additional nine days for training and preparation before students to return to class.
The Hawaii State Board of Education (BOE) has scheduled a special meeting Thursday to take action on a number of scenarios that would give educators more time to prepare before students return to class during the pandemic.
"State officials should opt to delay the Aug. 4 start for students by up to a week, while tasking school facilities to hammer out, absorb and train up on more-through plans," the newspaper editorialized Wednesday.

After a record number of educators and parents expressed concerns about unsafe social distancing protocols that violate a school reopening agreement between the state and Hawaii State Teachers Association, the Hawaii State Board of Education Thursday night voted to defer approval of the deal.
“This is going to be a teacher-oriented Department of Education. It’s not going to come from the top-down, it’s coming from the teachers up,” Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden told NEA RA delegates Friday.
“For the safety of my students, their families and my own family, I implore the DOE to be firm and consistent in their guidance that we will practice physical distancing of six feet whenever possible, even in the classroom,” Nimitz Elementary teacher Logan Okita said.
