Volunteers from HSTA's Hilo Chapter were up before the crack of dawn for the Big Island International Marathon.

Several members, a retired teacher and fellow supporters manned an aid station near the start line along Hawaii Belt Road on Sunday, March 17.

Our UniServ director reported lots of appreciation from the runners, and not just for the drinks. We received many shoutouts to HSTA and our teachers!

Several teachers also participated in the marathon, half-marathon and 5K races.

Hilo Chapter has been involved with the Big Island International Marathon since its inception thanks to late race director, Wayne "Big Dog" Joseph, a retired social studies teacher and cross country coach for Waiakea High School.

HSTA Hilo Chapter is proud to honor his legacy.
