DOE allows walk-ins for Special Education Summer Conference 2019

Enrich your skills, gain resources and improve practices for working with students with disabilities

The Department of Education's Office of Student Support Services, Exceptional Support Branch, hosts the 2019 Summer Hawaii State Special Education (HSSE) Conference July 15–25 at various statewide sites. This conference is free for teachers to attend.

Although online registration has already closed, the DOE said it’s not too late to participate. Walk-ins are welcome at all locations on a first-come, first-served basis.

A “Talk Story with the Attorney General” will be held at each conference site. The conference will also feature Dr. Victor Rios, an award-winning college professor, author, and speaker. Rios will talk about his childhood, dropping out of school, being adjudicated, returning to school and graduating with his class because of a teacher who believed in him. He went on to college and today is the ultimate model and success story of how believing in your students provides all children with the opportunity to succeed. Rios continues his work with the hardest-to-reach population and works with educators to remove the deficit perspective in education and to change mindsets.

All general and special education teachers, counselors, school administrators, related service providers, district and state personnel are invited to attend this voluntary conference to enrich their skills, gain resources and improve practices when working with students with disabilities.

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided at all conference sites.
