Oʻahu teachers will join neighbor island educators online Friday for Institute

Gov. Josh Green announced earlier today that state government, including public schools and offices, will be closed on Monday, Feb. 9, due to severe weather. School Superintendent Keith Hayashi announced that no one is to report to any Hawaiʻi State Department of Education campus or office. Charter school educators should check with their administrators for any pertinent information about their closures.

First and foremost, the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association wants to ensure that all across the state are safe and secure. We send our appreciation to first responders who are working tirelessly during this storm.

As a result of the weather-related closures, we want educators on Oʻahu to know that the Teacher Institute Day that was supposed to happen on Monday will be rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 13. Neighbor island educators were already scheduled to observe Institute Day on Friday, and this adjustment aligns Oʻahu teachers with those previously planned Institute Day activities.

Since you won’t be going to school or your workplace on Monday, you can take advantage of our Institute Marketplace through Sunday, Feb. 15, and enjoy discounts from 10% to 30% at 42 local vendors.

Teachers on all islands can join our livestream as early as 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, for check-in and initial video announcements listing our workshops and discounts from local vendors in our Institute Marketplace. The Institute Day general session runs from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by two breakout sessions at 10 and 11 a.m. Please watch for special emails late Thursday afternoon and Friday morning with important last-minute reminders and tips to help ensure a smooth and successful Institute Day. You can review the descriptions of our 30 workshops here.

The education department announced Sunday afternoon that students will not report to HIDOE schools on Oʻahu on Friday, Feb. 13, as educators at Oʻahu schools observe a rescheduled Institute Day. There will be no in-person instruction for Oʻahu or neighbor island students on Friday, Feb. 13.

In alignment with the governor’s directive, HSTA’s offices on all islands will also be closed on Monday.

Mahalo for all that you do, and please keep safe.
