HSTA successfully obtained EES clarifications

During the Hawaii State Teacher Association’s first-ever virtual Institute Week in February, it became apparent that some administrators incorrectly implemented or applied the Educator Effectiveness System (EES) observation which included informal and formal observations, and the artifacts of instructional practice, known as AIP.

As a result of the feedback received during Institute workshops from many educators, it was crucial that the EES Joint Committee teacher leaders addressed pressing concerns regarding observations and the use of the newly implemented AIP to the Hawaii State Department of Education.

After much back and forth between HSTA and HIDOE, the department published a new EES memo for your review and understanding that will help administrators follow EES requirements properly.

Thank you to our dedicated and committed members of the EES Joint Committee for advocating and speaking on HSTA members’ behalf to ensure that the EES adjustments for this school year are being applied correctly. Commendations to the teacher leaders on the committee: Diane Mokuau (Molokai Chapter), Bea DeRego (Windward Chapter), Ashley Olson (Maui Chapter), and Logan Okita (Central Chapter).

If there are any concerns, please communicate with your evaluator, contact the EES Help Desk, or reach out to your UniServ Director for assistance if you received a rating of less than effective because your administrator mishandled the distance learning (DL) observation.

HIDOE’s EES Help Desk provides callers with knowledge, awareness, and understanding of the EES components. In addition, the Help Desk documents caller feedback to improve overall EES training and implementation planning. Please call (808) 586-4072, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., except state holidays and the winter break period.
