The HSTA's Human and Civil Rights Committee seeks nominations for its Friend of Youth Award and Pono Award.

The Pono Award is given each year to an exceptional HSTA member who advocates for social justice issues that impact the lives of students, fellow educators and the community. The recipient of the Pono Ward will be submitted as HSTA's nominee to the National Education Association's Social Justice Activist Award.

The Friend of Youth Award will be given to an outstanding HSTA member or non-member who has impacted youth of Hawaii through involvement in youth-oriented activities outside of their profession. The committee is looking for an individual who has contributed outstanding support/involvement outside of their professional duties.  As all teachers work with and impact youth (students) within the course of their paid job and profession, the contribution should be above and beyond or outside of their job.
