Peaceful protests planned across the islands, nation
Updated: June 12, 2025
On Saturday, June 14, numerous ‘No Kings!’ Day of Defiance events are planned across the Hawaiian islands and around the country as an all-out effort to protect democracy and the U.S. Constitution, led by Indivisible Hawai’i Statewide Network.
More than 7,000 Hawaiʻi residents, including teachers, veterans, immigration and civil rights advocates, are expected to join events on Oʻahu, Maui, and Hawaiʻi Island to send a message to President Donald Trump on his birthday: “No Kings!”
The nationwide peaceful mass rallies in hundreds of cities in all 50 states coincide with Trump’s birthday on June 14, when he plans for a large military parade with tanks to roll through the streets of Washington, D.C.
Lisa Gibson, lead for the Indivisible Hawai’i Statewide Network, said, “The president’s parade is an unprecedented show of force to intimidate us. Even more disturbing, it will cost millions of taxpayer dollars when, at the same time, the president and MAGA in Congress are saying there isn’t enough money for what we value as ‘essential, life-saving, hard fought for programs and services’ such as Medicaid, food for children, affordable, accessible health care, environmental protections and veterans services.”
“Hawai’i treasures its kings. Trump is no king. June 14 is President Trump’s birthday, and our peaceful mass mobilizations here in Hawai’i and across the country are a birthday gift to let the president know that the people of Hawai’i will not quietly give up hard fought for rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution,” Gibson added.
HSTA President Osa Tui, Jr. said, “While our nation’s capital will be hosting a military parade on Saturday, Hawaiʻi will continue its tradition of aloha by honoring a real king, King Kamehameha, in our state’s capital with the 108th King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade and other events throughout the state.”
He continued, “One of the things that makes America great is a tradition of exerting our constitutional rights to stand up and speak out regarding injustices taking place by our government. Whether you’re home in Hawaiʻi or abroad during summer break, feel free to join in one of the No Kings Day of Defiance demonstrations taking place nationwide.”
