Maui, Kauaʻi HSTA chapters also planning events
Posted: April 23, 2025
Members of the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association will join members of at least 20 other Hawaiʻi unions Thursday, May 1 for a silent solidarity march to support federal employees on International Workers Day. The theme for the march is “All Workers Need Unions.”
The march will begin at 5 p.m. at the State Capitol and will end at the federal building. Here is a map of the march route.
The purpose of this silent march is to show solidarity with our federal sector brothers and sisters who are losing their jobs, or who have lost their collective bargaining rights. Because this is a silent march, there will be no bullhorns. Other forms of silent protest such as signs and shirts will be encouraged. Please wear any HSTA shirt or logo wear that’s comfortable. Looking for sign ideas? Check some out here.
To reduce traffic and avoid parking hassles, HSTA is chartering three buses for members, departing from Mililani, Kāneʻohe, and Kapolei at 3:30 p.m. and returning from town at 6:30 p.m. There is plenty of room on the buses that you can board at the following locations:
• Mililani High School – Park in upper parking lot along Meheula Parkway (please do not park in the shopping center)
• Kapolei High School – Park in front parking lot along Kapolei Parkway (bus will load near the flagpole)
• Windward Community College – Park in the lot by Hale A’o, which is towards the front of the school (bus will load on the main road leading into WCC)
Members of HSTA, other unions and labor supporters are welcome to use the bus service.
If you are driving on your own, do not park in the basement parking structure at the Capitol building, because the building and parking structure close at 6 pm. A map with metered parking around the Capitol is located here.
Neighbor island events
Neighbor island members are encouraged to set up sign-waving events or other solidarity efforts before or after school on May 1.
HSTA Maui Chapter is planning on doing sign-waving in front of the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center (by the old Sears) in Kahului from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on May 1. They are looking forward to standing in solidarity on May Day with our fellow public sector union members and standing up for public laborers at this critical time.
HSTA Kauaʻi Chapter will hold a sign-waving event on May 1 as well at the Historic Kauaʻi County Building Lawn from 4 to 6 p.m. They will be partnering with Kauaʻi Indivisible. Anyone who supports public education is welcome to stand with Kauaʻi educators to show their support.
