On Monday, June 10, Pearl Harbor Historic Sites will hold an education seminar on Hawaii Island to introduce teachers to STEM curriculum designed by the United States Naval Academy.

The seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo.

It is open to third- through eighth-grade teachers. Space is limited.

Registration costs $15 and includes access to the U.S. Naval Academy STEM curriculum.

This multidisciplinary approach includes:

  • Engaging, ready-to-use lessons aligned with Next Generation Science Standards,

  • Collaborative activities that connect the history of technology and innovation with STEM pathways.

Topics include mechanics and simple machines; energy, electricity, and chemistry; air and space technology; and engineering design.

Snacks will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch or purchase food from the center's Sky Garden Restaurant.

Feedback from fellow teachers:

"The experience was amazing! I felt very uneasy about teaching STEM but this training has boosted my confidence. I’m excited to take this back to my school and students."

"This training helped me build my knowledge-bank of science, math, and engineering topics that can be tied to a variety of topic areas."

NOTE: This is the final seminar for 2019. Additional sessions are being planned for 2020.
