National survey finds Hawaiʻi’s SPED differential highest in the country
A national survey reveals that Hawaiʻi’s $10,000 shortage differential for special education teachers remains the highest in the country and has greatly reduced the number of unlicensed SPED teachers in the islands.

Across the country, more than three dozen educators and school staff have been removed from their jobs or sidelined because of allegations that they made mocking or disparaging remarks, often on personal social media channels, about conservative organizer Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week in Utah.

Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association members, please join us for the 2025 Honolulu Pride Parade on Saturday, Oct. 18! The parade begins at 3 p.m. from Magic Island in Ala Moana Regional Park, proceeds down Ala Moana Boulevard and Kalākaua Avenue, and ends at Kapiʻolani Park.

HSTA board selects Andrea Eshelman as next executive director
The Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association Board of Directors has appointed Andrea Eshelman as HSTA’s next executive director. She brings nearly three decades of experience as a public school teacher, union leader, manager and chief negotiator to her new position.
