Sign up for State Special Education Conference by May 31

Events will be held across the state between July 15 and 25

The Department of Education's Office of Student Support Services, Exceptional Support Branch, will host the 2019 Summer Hawaii State Special Education (HSSE) Conference to be held July 15 through 25 at various statewide sites.  A “Talk Story with the Attorney General” will be held at each conference site.

This conference will feature Dr. Victor Rios, an award winning college professor, author, and speaker.  Dr. Rios will talk about his childhood, dropping out of school, being adjudicated, returning to school and graduating with his class because of a teacher that believed in him. He went on to college and today is the ultimate model and success story of how believing in your students provides all children with the opportunity to succeed. Dr. Rios continues his work with the hardest to reach population and works with educators to remove the deficit perspective in education and to change mindsets.

All general and special education teachers, counselors, school administrators, related service providers, district and state personnel are invited to attend this voluntary conference to enrich their skills, gain resources and improve practices when working with students with disabilities.

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided at all conference sites.
