15 months before you retire
Get information from the HIDOE
Note your retirement notice deadline
- April 1 for retirements effective between May 1 and Aug. 31
- All other times, 30 days prior to the date of separation
3 months before you retire
- Schedule a meeting with ERS to review your years of service and how to calculate your retirement benefit.
- Ask about converting unused days to count for years of service (20 days equals one month of service credit).
Confirm how long your medical coverage lasts after retirement and what benefits carry over upon retirement.
Inform the HSTA VEBA Trust office of your retirement date and check to see what plans can be continued or converted.
30 days prior to retirement
Inform HIDOE of your intent to retire
- Reach out to your Personnel Regional Officer (PRO) to inquire about HIDOE procedures.
- Submit four copies of Form 300-011 to your supervisor.

Donate your unused leave
You can donate any remaining days to the HIDOE sick leave bank, which is pooled and distributed to teachers who are in need of days.
- Download the leave sharing donation form from the HIDOE intranet; sign in and search for Form 300-002.
