With menstrual equity now mandated by law in Hawaiʻi public schools, how can educators follow up and support their schools in this endeavor? This resource page provides an overview of period poverty, the benefits of menstrual equity on absenteeism and student confidence, an easy-to-follow implementation tool kit, and best practices to ensure menstruating students have access to free period products at your school.

“Building menstrual equity in schools” is presented by the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association Human and Civil Rights Committee and Maʻi Movement Hawaiʻi. You can watch the full workshop above or on YouTube here.

Hawaiʻi’s menstrual equity law

On June 20, 2022, Gov. David Ige signed SB2821 into law, effective July 1, 2022, requiring the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education to provide menstrual products to all students, free of charge, on all public school campuses, including public charter schools. Two million dollars was allocated for the 2022–23 fiscal year.
