Register for three virtual courses by June 9

Early career educators in their second through fourth years of teaching can register for free Professional Learning Community (PLC) opportunities this summer from the Hawaiʻi Teacher Induction Center.

These three virtual courses, taught by Hawaiʻi State Department of Education teachers, will engage participants in evidence-based practices to meet the diverse and evolving needs of new teachers. Materials will be provided to participants.

Each course is open to the first 40 registered teachers, and participants are expected to attend all sessions of the course they register for. Submit your interest via each course’s registration link. Upon confirmation, you will be provided the course number to register in PDE3 to earn non-credit professional development hours.

The deadline to register is Friday, June 9.

Special education PLC: Building capacity and community

In this course for special education teachers, learn how to organize your IEP caseload, understand your students and their IEPs, explore your school’s system and culture, and nurture your colleague and student relationships.

When: July 17 to 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Quarterly follow-ups will be required; dates and times will be provided to participants at a later date.

Supporting multilingual learners to success

Fill your teacher toolbox with instructional strategies and resources, TESOL’s 6 principles and WIDA standards, sheltered instruction teaching methods, and more. Participants will also earn 18 non-credit hours for the Sheltered Instruction Qualification (SIQ).

When: June 27 to 30, from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Quarterly follow-ups will take place on the following Mondays from 3 to 5 p.m.: Aug. 28, Oct. 23, Jan. 29, and April 8.

Trauma-informed practices: Empowering student engagement through the SEL framework

In this course, learn how to increase awareness and understanding of trauma and its impact on teaching, learning, and behavior. Gain practical, easy-to-implement strategies to help students who have experienced trauma be more successful in the classroom and learn mindfulness practices to improve mental health.

When: June 16 and 23, July 7 and 14, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Quarterly follow-ups will take place on the following Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m.: Aug. 29, Oct. 17, Jan. 16, and April 2.
