Public school teachers, librarians can take all the books they can carry

The Kids in Need Foundation and Scholastic are providing thousands of free new school books to teachers for two days this week at the Hawaii State Department of Education’s Back-to-School Book Giveaway at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Oahu.

The book giveaway will be held Thursday, July 22, from 3 to 9 p.m. and Friday, July 23, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Paid parking at the NBC lot and structure costs $8, but free and metered on-street parking are also available nearby.

The HIDOE says the books are appropriate for pre-K, K–1, grades 2–3, 4–5, 4–8, and adults.

Attendance will be limited to public school teachers and librarians who are Bargaining Unit 05 members.

You must show both HIDOE identification and proof of your COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test 48 hours prior. Masks will be required. Children will not be allowed if they have not been vaccinated.

The thousands of free books will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Book bags from the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation will be given to the first 50 teachers who attend the giveaway each day. There is no limit to how many books each teacher receives, but they must be able to carry out whatever they select on their own. Orders, deliveries are not available. Nothing will be reserved or held for pickup.

Mahalo to Scholastic and the Kids in Need Foundation for the generous donations of these books.
