HSTA filed class grievance earlier in this year

In January, the HSTA initiated a demand for bargaining regarding the employer’s announcement that it would use emergency reassignment of teachers to address substitute shortages. The HSTA also filed a class grievance on the matter.

Through the grievance process, the HSTA is pleased to report that the HIDOE has now rescinded the emergency assignment memo and the grievance has been settled.

Members should also know that the HSTA found only a handful of individuals who were affected by this memo and/or directed to substitute for another teacher. UniServ Directors have separately provided those individuals representation to address their situations.

The vast majority of teachers affected by the substitute shortage have volunteered to cover someone else’s class. Members should be aware of their rights in this area. Please see this recent article for more details.
