Teachers on advisory committee providing feedback for finalist selection

The Hawaii Board of Education will interview finalists for the next Hawaii State Department of Education superintendent during a special meeting on May 19.

The search committee of four board members conducted initial virtual interviews with seven candidates. Finalists will be recommended to the board on May 5, according to a BOE report Thursday.

Two teachers, listed below, and 12 other education stakeholders have been assisting the search committee, from creating the job description to drafting interview questions. This advisory group is currently watching recorded interviews of top candidates and providing feedback.

  • Whitney Aragaki, 2022 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year; Hawaii State Teacher Fellow; Waiakea High School teacher

The search committee will release its final recommendations for superintendent on April 29 ahead of the board’s general business meeting on May 5. Then on May 19, the full board will interview and deliberate on the finalists. The public will be able to watch the interviews and potential selection live.
