Moanalua Gardens Foundation (MGF) and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife are holding their last free workshop of the school year for fourth-grade teachers on Huakai o Kamananui, Aloha Aina Moanalua place-based environmental education curriculum.

The Aloha Aina Moanalua curriculum Grade 4 unit includes a Moanalua ahupuaa map, old photographs of the area and lesson plans featuring moolelo (stories) of Moanalua.

The workshop will take place on Saturday, March 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Moanalua Middle School Library, 1289 Mahiole Street, and Kamananui (Moanalua) Valley.

Participating teachers receive:

  • A teacher’s guide with Common Core and HCPS III standards-based lesson plans, student activity sheets, rubrics, CDs, a DVD and other resources,
  • Opportunities to try the instructional activities with other educators,
  • Preview of service learning activities with a field excursion into Kamananui Valley,
  • Breakfast and lunch,
  • Native plants for out-planting in the valley with students, and
  • Free transportation for valley student field experience.

MGF will provide all materials plus meals and refreshments. The workshop is open to interested teachers from other grades upon request.

The curriculum meets Common Core and HCPS III Standards. This is a great opportunity for fourth-grade teachers to get a turnkey curriculum, learn about teaching opportunities in Kamananui Valley, and receive free bus transportation for their students.
