Closures due to approach of Tropical Storm Calvin

All Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) schools and offices on Hawai‘i Island will be closed to students and staff on Wednesday, July 19.

The closures are in accordance with orders from Gov. Josh Green and Hawai‘i County Mayor Mitch Roth due to the approach of Tropical Storm Calvin.

Under the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association contract, emergency school closures are to be in compliance with the newly agreed Memorandum of Understanding for Extended Emergency School Closures (pages 111–113). This includes the following language: “Should the school closure be for one (1) day or less, teachers shall not be required to remain at, nor report to, said schools. Teachers shall, at the discretion of the principal, use the time for teacher-initiated preparation or professional development.”

The HSTA Hilo office will also be closed on Wednesday. Members who need immediate assistance should contact the Oʻahu office at (808) 833-2711.
