Scholarships available to pay for sheltered instruction credits

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) recently alerted the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association (HSTA) about an opportunity for HIDOE teachers to be reimbursed for costs of seeking completion of their of six Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Sheltered Instruction Qualification (SIQ) course credits.

To be eligible for the department’s SIQ Professional Learning Scholarship Program, teachers must:

  • Not currently be SIQ; and
  • Demonstrate commitment to contribute to the Language Instruction Educational Program in place at their school, or a dedicated commitment to supporting and providing guidance to the EL program from the complex area; and
  • Be approved applicants who attend designated local institutions of higher education such as the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Kapiʻolani Community College, Hawaiʻi Pacific University and Brigham Young University.

Scholarships are available for:

  • Summer 2023: application due Friday, May 5, 2023.
  • Fall 2023: application due Friday, August 4, 2023.
  • A limited number of scholarships have also been set aside to retroactively reimburse teachers who paid out of pocket for approved courses during Fall 2022 and Spring 2023.
